SAN ANGELO — Two people filed to run for San Angelo city government posts on Thursday, Jan. 19.

Charlotte Farmer, who has served as the San Angelo City Council member for Single Member District 6 since 2005, has decided to run for mayor and filed the requisite paperwork.

Tom Thompson, marketing director for the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, filed to fun for the SMD 2 seat, currently held by Marty Self.

In a news release distributed Thursday afternoon, Farmer offered an exhaustive list of projects she has been involved in, ranging from successful passage of the half-cent sales tax to participation in developing the long-term city street replacement plan.

"For all of these reasons I feel it is time to step down as SMD #6 Council Member and allow others to feel free to step in the ring. Also for all those same reasons and more such as about six very serious matters coming before us and about three uncompleted projects that I wish to follow through with I am asking for your support and your vote for mayor this May," the release said.

With Farmer out of the race for for SMD 6, political newcomer Steve Hampton is, for now, the sole candidate for that post. SMD 6 covers a large swath of west central and western San Angelo, including The Bluffs and parts of College Hills.

Farmer is the third candidate to declare a run for mayor in May. She currently faces Brenda Gunter and Tony Villarreal.

Filing for the election remains open through Feb. 17. The May election will determine representatives for Single Member Districts 2, 4 and 6 as well as the mayor.
